Wonderfully detailed and interesting world with well drawn and complex characters. I can't wait to start the next book.

I probably would have given this book a 3.5 rating, but since that's not an option I am bumping it up to 4 stars, mostly based on my love for Robin Hobb's other works and because she is awesome.
I read the Liveship Trilogy, the Rain Wild Chronicles, and the Soldier's Son Trilogy prior to this so I am familiar with the author and I'm finally getting around to reading her earlier books. I went into this with high expectations because I love this world she's built and couldn't wait to spend some more time there. While I wasn't completely blown away, neither was I completely disappointed.
This one starts out a lot slower than I anticipated. It's mostly due to her highly detailed descriptions of the world, with a few extraneous passages of introspection thrown in, and I wasn't sure where it was headed at first. I knew enough to stick with it, though, and I was rewarded when the action picks up about half-way through and suddenly I couldn't put the book down. That's the Robin Hobb I know and love! I am hooked for sure and will be reading Royal Assassin shortly. Really looking forward to watching FitzChivalry's story develop.

This is a beautiful book. I cried at many points, which always surprises me in a fantasy book. Her writing is succinct and she can spin a yarn well. I would recommend this and any of the Farseer Trilogy to kids ten and up. Wish I had discovered them younger and passed the afternoons with such satisfying characters.
