At 12-14 I probably would've loved this. At 30-something I just cannot tolerate the shallow/nonexistent relationship building. I thought the fae were poorly done - Rook especially, who's just an awkward straightforward human but with special fae magic and immortal hotness. There is nothing strange or unearthly about him. It's a tired gripe now to complain about obscenely ancient beings falling in love with 17 year old protagonists; similarly tired to gripe about teenagers who have unearned mastery over extremely difficult fields.

I could not enjoy the writing because it felt like the author was trying to use $5 words rather than choosing the best words to convey her intent. It's not the worst prose - better than ACOTAR - just noticeable. Descriptors felt empty; pretty phrasing that meant nothing.

The over the top declarations of love were gag inducing and the characters felt stiff.

1.5 for personal enjoyment, 3 overall because I know in a curmudgeonly old lady and it's not meant for my age range. Split the difference for Storygraph.

Uses a lot of tropes, but if you like those tropes like I did it I’d perfectly charming. A great palate cleanser. Like Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries meets The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea.

3.5 stars for the autumnal vibes, nature writing, and depiction of fae folk.

Unfortunately, this book suffers from insta-love and the "she's not like other girls" trope. Also the age gap is a tad creepy, but at least the male love interest isn't as creepy as a certain sparkly vampire. And the MC has an actual personality.

This book made me realize that fae love interests are literally the new vampires. I am ready to die on this hill.

I also strongly believe that books should not all be rated on the same scale but according to what the are trying to be. I'm pretty sure this book was trying to be an emotional and whimsical fantasy romance so... I think it succeeded! I love an easy fantasy romance *standalone* where I don't have to get invested in a series of 3+ books. The world was interesting, the relationship was spicy (very questionable imo, but spicy), and the ending was satisfying while still leaving things to the imagination. Definitely will pick up the newer Margaret Rogerson.
