The Professor is the first novel Charlotte Bronte wrote, though it wasn't published until after her death. The central character, the professor, is William Crimsworth. William is an English teacher at an all-girls' school in Brussels and he falls in love with one of his own pupils. (A student-teacher romance, sound familiar? That's probably because it is based on Bronte's own experiences as a teacher of English at a boarding school in Brussels, where she fell in love with her own teacher.)

The Professor is very well written. Even though it's Bronte's first novel, you can clearly see what she is capable of with her narration. I liked it, didn't love it and that's perhaps because it is so much like that other story she wrote later than this, (but published before), [b:Villette|31173|Villette|Charlotte Brontë|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1320412741s/31173.jpg|2033945]. Though it is told via a male narrator (her only novel that was) and it is a marvelous little story, I just love Villette too much to really love this one.

Also - there was a ton of French in this book and no notes in this edition. Perhaps I would've liked it a tad more if I would've understood some of the French?

why did we have to introduce and then kill off a dog in the last 2% of the book, cHARLOTTE?

No but seriously. This book is like Villette if Villette were genderflipped and also way more boring. Where are my ghost nuns?? Where's the drama where's the je ne sais quoi?

There were a few gleams of cool prose, but not enough to redeem the rest of the book. I did enjoy laughing at the narrator's extreme xenophobia—Belgians are stupid and ugly while French people are stupid and pretty but like in a slutty way, and this is because Europeans are Catholics and therefore have no morals because their false church teaches them to lie. Their barbarous duplicitous Catholicism vs our Glorious #unproblematic Anglican Protestantism (just don't google how it came about.) To be fair, the protagonist also rants about how much his native England sucks and that part is also hilarious, so. It's equality

[3.5 Stars] Though I found the complex characters quite intriguing, this book was not quite as enjoyable to me as other Bronte works. Also, parts of this book were a little strange and sadistic/masochistic, so yeah a little strange. Then again I almost expect that from Charlotte Bronte now...

1/ for reasons unknown to even me i just couldnt feel the characters you know? like they just were there and i wasnt looking forward to reading about them or what happened next which is kind of a big deal considering rhis mostly was about their lives
2/ i was bored. like so utterly bored, i fell asleep once while i was reading this
3/ now this one i know is purely on me because this is an old book and stuff but i couldnt help but squint at some of the choices william made during the book

+ points for the prose and language though
