this book is approximately about nothing it is advertised as, and is actually about the epic highs and lows of boxing. also i don’t enjoy the use of sexual violence for cheap revenge plots, or poor characterization (what is pilar’s personality…. genuinely?)

Meh! The prose didn't match up to Carey's usual richness, and I felt that the implications of migration, American imperialism, civil rights, the military-industrial complex, etc., that the story brought up were used as color and not explored in enough detail. Too many stereotyped characters as well.
