I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be ready to read this book because I remembered the way reading Chanel’s victim impact statement on BuzzFeed gutted me.

San Diego picked it for this year’s One Book, One San Diego though, so I decided it was time.

I don’t know that you can ever be ready for this book. But, there are times you can be more ready. You may need breaks, take them.

Chanel’s story matters. Her willingness to let us know her name, and know her story through her eyes, is a bravery I can’t comprehend. And while her story is uniquely hers, she recognizes and shares all of the ways in which it’s shared too.

If you aren’t a survivor, try to find a way to read this book. If you are, exercise caution, but know that you may find solace in the solidarity.
