I struggled through this, mainly due to a lot of the plot and world building that felt incomplete or rushed over. However the banter and tension between Pae and Kai was enjoyable.

If I wanted to enjoy a well-written and gripping novel about two star-crossed lovers trapped in a dystopian world that discriminates against a class of people, with a blood sport tournament thrown in as the main plot device…

I would have read The Hunger Games.

There were some small passages and quotes that were well-written, but those were few and far between and were buried in a sea of heteronormative expectations, dubious consent, gender stereotypes, lazy writing (take a shot every time Paedyn scoffs or Kai has a muscle feather in his jaw, I’ll wait) and Mary Sue levels of character writing. A predictable story can be a nice read if there are characters worth reading about. I’m sorry to say that this book really highlights its title of “TikTok made me buy it”… because nothing else about this book would make me ever want to part with my money over it. I’m so thankful that libraries exist.

I really liked this book!
The world building didn’t feel like an info dump even if most of it was right at the start, it gave a good canvas for the story to play out on.
The characters and their motivations seemed very cut and dry so it was fun to watch them grow and change throughout.
I like Paedyn and Kai a lot, they had good banter and chemistry.
Some of the elements reminded me of other books but that isn’t a bad thing since this stands on its own to me.
I’m excited to read the next book!
My biggest gripe is the love triangle. While I don’t dislike love triangles in general this one being two brothers is what I didn’t like. It also felt obvious that Paedyn and Kai liked each other when Kitt inserted himself into the narrative.

The overarching story idea wasn't the most original and the book was quite predictable, but I loved the world building and the character building and development

The romance in this book is slow and delicious. Everything else could be better. The premise is a little jumbled and the book suffers from some odd pacing. I do really enjoy these characters and their interactions with each other and I'll be reading the next book.
