This book is really just a mix of Hunger Games and Red Queen, and like the author said, that is the intention. It was a light enjoyable read chock full of tropes. I am disappointed the book didn’t go deeper into themes that are present in its parent books, and that there is no real kiss scene! Honestly if this books was spicy it would be a much worthier read. But otherwise I did enjoy it and will probably read the next books in the series.

”It’s the way he’s looking at me that suddenly
makes swallowing seem like a struggle, breathing seem like a chore. I’ve never been looked at like it’s a privilege to be in my presence, an honor to
hold my gaze, a gift to get a glimpse of me. Not until I met him.”
“Because beasts don’t get the beauty.”
“sleep, Pae.” I manage to give him a groggy grin before asking, “Are you going to sleep?” “Oh, darling, I’m already dreaming.”
Do I need to say more??

I understand the hype, but I was left a bit disappointed. I tried reading the book but as with some fantasy books, the first quarter left me completely confused, so I switched to the audiobook and thank goodness for Chase Brown.
It took far too long for Kai and Paedyn to finally meet. Once they did, the story started to improve, and I was excited for the enemies-to-lovers trope, which I usually love. But wow, this plot is seriously drawn out. I've just finished the second book, and they’re still stretching things out. I had no idea I was committing to a four or five-book saga.

This was another version of Red Queen when mixed with Hunger Games. It didn’t do it better in any way – Not the characters, not the writing and not the concepts – but it was entertaining enough to finish. I am not sure if I’ll continue with the series, but I’m glad I formed my own opinion about a (meh) book that’s super hyped.
