The authors experience is confusing, spiritual, and emotional which comes through via the interactions between himself and the other runners memories.
Some of the confusion may be on me since I was having issues concentrating w my chatty kid.
It’s unfortunate that he left college to run however, having to endure something like that without a proper support network could have resulted in his own mental battle.. what’s to say that he wouldn’t also experience a similar situation to that of his elders but in the modern day context.. it may not be the residential school abuse but it could come through in a similar way with substance abuse, toxic relationships between himself and his peers.
Z’s “spiritual stitch work” resonated and felt powerful to me because you may have some kind of awakening but really it’s the patchwork or stitch work of living with intention, the support network you gain and the experiences you have trying to find yourself all stitched together to create an awakened you.
One of my favorite paragraphs was: “we continue to slip in and out of society like ghosts in the night, connecting our hearts and minds with the land and the many tribals peoples who cross our paths ever single day, carrying the heavy threads of prayers of hundreds of individuals. We run through landscapes that are referred to by their original native names. Reinvoking the power of a name. Landscapes that start to take the form of our traumas and offer some healing.”

I was really loving it until the end. It felt really rushed.
Additionally, this was really hard to follow as an audiobook. Some of the flashbacks were presented without timelines or context, and it was hard to know where in the story I was. Being able to follow along with a physical book may have made that easier.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story.

I wish this was more detailed and longer. Moments of it hit so hard, but I felt like a lot of it was rushed - especially time on the run. I loved how the author showed us his childhood and background.
