Even though I will say that this was my least favorite of Janie Chang's books, I still did enjoy reading it. It just didn't blow me away like her other two books. The magical realism wasn't as fun (ghosts, but they didn't really feel like ghosts, probably because they didn't do anything except talk for 3/4 of the book). The characters were just as interesting as was the historical setting. I was a bit miffed about the ending, although I do understand why it ended the way it did. It still felt quick and unfinished imo.

enjoyed the history… and while obviously period-typical the sexism made this not very enjoyable for me personally, but certainly a worthwhile and interesting read!
