It wasn't really that much worse than the previous volumes, but the fact that there is no accounting with Illyan and / or Miles's parents at the end made it feel oddly incomplete to me.

That, or I missed having more of my favourite characters.

That said, it was very imaginative and complex (worldbuilding-wise), but the plotting wasn't as tight as in some earlier volumes, and... Miles has become somewhat obnoxious. But I'm still very much looking forward to some later plot developments I've been spoiled for, so - onward go I.

A rare miss in the middle of the Vorkosigan series. Miles falls instantly in "love" with a lady because she is so beautiful. *gag* The Cetagandan world was interesting, but most of the characters weren't.

I mean, you really can't go wrong with a Lois McMaster Bujold book, but this was not my favorite of the Vorkosigan saga books. It just didn't have quite the emotional impact of the others that I have read. But a so-so Bujold book is still better than 90% of other books out there.

"Cetaganda" is a mix of a murder mystery, a thoughtful look at genetic manipulation, and a book about politics and diplomacy. It is fast-paced, very funny in places, and entertaining throughout.

I am learning to love Miles more and more (he might almost be tied with Penric soon as a favorite Bujold character); I found the Cetagandan empire fascinating (especially the haut), and I really enjoyed Miles' sarcastic, devoted, competitive, protective relationship with his cousin Ivan.

But I am wondering if there will ever be a Miles book where I am not worried that he is going to be dreadfully exposed, dishonored, or killed?! Will he ever catch a break? Obviously, I will be devotedly reading until I find out.

Super enjoying this series. It's not perfect, but it's sucked me in! One of my favorite weird future cultures.

While i didn't love this one quite as much as Vor Game or Warrior's Apprentice, I have never laughed as hard as I did at the kittens in the garden. @plottrysts knows.
The premise of this has to do with protecting genetic code, which is really interesting when the Cetagandans view Miles as corrupt genetic code because of his disability. But Meg and I were talking about the fact that this is the first time you start to feel bad for all Ivan has to put up with with Miles's....good ideas 😂
