I got this as a surprise for Christmas and it was just so much fun. I loved the stories and the pictures. Definitely will be a fun tradition to read every year.

Such a great book of short letters written in the Great Tolkien way. It’s so amazing to see how he spoilt his kids with these great letters that were so well thought out. A master story teller always.

I'm sure these letters were epic for, and meant the world to, Tolkien's children, for whom they were written.

However, the stories were too short for me, cutting off right when they could have become interesting; and there were so many personal references to his kids and the letters they had sent to "Father Christmas," that I was disappointed with the collection.

A delightful journey but largely for completists. The book collects the Letters from Father Christmas that Tolkien wrote for his children over multiple years. They are quaint and charming but obviously not as polished as his published work. They provide hints about his family, his children's lives, and even the impact of WWII. A number of bits (goblins, fireworks, snowboys), hint at elements that make it into his more famous works; most notable is the appearance of the horn, Windbeam, which also appears in some unused notes for "Lord of the Rings" as the horn of Elrond, blown only in time of great need. Probably the best part are the illustrations. Tolkien is known for his writing but he was also a gifted artist with a distinct style and sense of composition, and his work for his children reflects that. Likely not for the casual reader but worth it for true fans.

The best book to read before Christmas, just don’t get sad over the kids growing up.

This was truly a cute book and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Tolkien took the time to write special letters to his children from Father Christmas, even going as far as to draw pictures that went with the letter. There is also a magical polar bear that lives with Father Christmas and helps him out. It was so much fun to read the letters and feel like, if briefly, I had an insight to what it was like growing up as a Tolkien child. I can only imagine that their home was full of wonder and stories.
