I'm sure this book has brought a lot of joy to many kids and families, but this is not one I will be sharing during storytime.

I remember reading this as a kid because I love cats. I randomly remembered it and decided to seek it out, and I'm glad I did! The story is so cute and whimsical, and I love all the beautiful illustrations. They're not only full of color, but personality as well. I can see why kid me was always attracted to this series of books.

Skippyjon jones is one silly cat, with some serious attitude, who doesn't want to be a simple Siamese, but would much rather participate in wild antics. This story couples excellent words with, jazzy rhyming lines and charming illustrations that will surely energize, yet entertain children, and steal the hearts of adults.

I had never read it, but knew many students who liked it. Ack. I was very uncomfortable reading it aloud. Lots of stereotypes and the accents and adding 'ito' to the ends of the words just felt wrong.

My nearly 3 yo daughter LOVES this book.... it's not politically correct in the least (riddled with Mexican stereotypes), but this was a Christmas gift and she has a lot of fun with it, so I try to do my best to not be "that mom" and to just have fun with it. My daughter particularly loves Skippyjon's hilarious phrases--"Holy Guacamole!" makes her go into a fit of giggles every time we read it. There are some pages in this book that have WAY more words on them than others and her patience wanes on those pages from time to time, but she is only newly into preschool-level books (vs. toddler/board books) so that isn't surprising to me.

Anyways, I don't usually count picture books on Goodreads, but I'm using this for the Read Harder challenge so I guess I'll boost my reading numbers a little this year.

My son thinks this book is “fun” but I think it is offensive and plays on some horrible stereotypes of Mexican culture for laughs.

We adore this book! It might find its place permanently here. K requests it daily and quotes it frequently. Too cute! (The book and her.)

I think I was predisposed to like this book. I have a dog named Skippy and the main character's name is Skippyjon Jones. My daughter's name is Junia, we often call her June Bug, and Skippyjon's mother is named Junebug Jones. Hilarious.

That aside, this is a crazy, funny, off-the-wall book. Skippyjon Jones is a siamese cat who thinks he is a chihuahua. He has imaginary adventures. A good bit of Spanish is mixed into the story too, which is cool.
