Don’t read this straight after Heartstopper Vol 4 it will cause actual whiplash. Going from “awww I’m so happy and proud of them” to “they have sex in this one” is actually hilarious.

Anyway, it reads kind of like a really great fanfiction which is never a bad thing

Nick felt super out of character in this book. It felt Alice Oseman had a hard time transferring Nick's character from comic to plain novel format.

I also generally hate the "miscommunication" trope and this novel was FULL of it. This trope in particular doesn't really fit the dynamic of Nick + Charlie's relationship either, making it feel odd next to the original graphic novels.

However I did feel like the plot/conflict was relevant and reflective of this point in teenage life, which I appreciated!! I'm also a Tori and Nick's Mom stan so that helped boost my rating lmao.

Nick and Charlie

Alice Oseman

“You’re…it’s hard to explain. It’s like, if you had to provide evidence for soul mates, everyone would pick you two.”
(Aled Last: page 109)

JEEZ
This ended up turning into a try not to cry fest. I literally ended up crying a bit. I’ve only ever cried at one book before this (Solitaire) and I’ve only cried at something on the tv once (Star Wars: clone wars end of season 5) so well done Alice Oseman, you made me cry. I literally had to put down the book and put my sad song (Flares by The Script) and listen to that on repeat.

I think that this is an important story in Nick and Charlie’s arks. It was not what I expected. I was told by my friend that she was told it was sad. I thought “oh how sad can it be? I’ve read a lot of sad books, I can handle this one.”  I WISH!!!

I don’t have to much to say other than the fact, do not get drunk when you’re trying to cover up emotions and this book is a low 4 ⭐️.

It was a good book. There was certainly some points of the book I found difficult to read after going through a break up but it is quite light hearted.

I love Nick and Charlie, so every part of their story as something I love as well. I do think the characters are a bit out of character for how they behave in other parts of the Osemanverse, which is why I couldn’t give it 5 stars. However, the situation depicted in this story is written so brilliantly overall, and I would recommend to any Oseman fan.
