This is a charming little retelling of Little Women where the author made the girls a bit younger and told only one year of their lives, from Christmas to Christmas. It's perfectly updated to modern times with Mr. March being away for a stint with the National Guard and Mrs. March working at a local Community Center. Jo writes scripts for home movies and the girls write a monthly 'zine. You still have the girls learning to navigate their world with kindness and passion. They learn to be better sisters, better daughters, and better friends. They learn to control their tempers and think for themselves. It's a big year of growth for them and it's a very enjoyable read. I loved that every chapter began with a quote from one of Jo's beloved books. Some of her favorites are my favorites too. I also enjoyed the recipes and craft ideas and such that was sprinkled throughout the book. Any young reader of this book will LOVE to follow them and translate from the book to real life.

An interesting update of the story but I hope, as the author does, "that it attracts you to the original version of the tale."

this was so cute. i have always been intimidated by classics such as little women (for no reason) so when this one got returned to the library, i knew i had to check it out. now that i know the general plot and the characters, i feel ready to read the original little women!

This book was a cute read. I keep going between 3 and 4 stars. 3 if I'm comparing to the classic, 4 if I pretend it isn't a retelling. A 21st century retelling of the classic Little Women, we join the four sisters on a year where dad is deployed and a sickness hits. I enjoyed seeing how the sisters grew over a year, adopted and overcame the various situations they faced. The recipes and crafts at the end of each chapter was also an excellent touch!

This book was really sweet. Schaefer makes the March sisters younger and drops them into modern-day America, but does a wonderful job of keeping her retelling faithful to Alcott's original. You can still see the original Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy in this story of family and friendship, told at more of a middle-grade level. Each chapter of this story concludes with a craft project or a recipe to add to the fun.
