Solid book on the effects of gun violence, PTSD, police corruption, and trauma. However, I figured it out from the beginning which is odd for me. But c’est la vie.

Well written with characters I liked. But man oh man was it a hard book to get through. What these characters went through is just awful and really challenging to read about, especially since the writing was so good. Almost too good, I felt I lived through the traumatic events. Some of the worst scenes are revisited/relived multiple times, I almost couldn't take it anymore. Really compelling characters though, which kept me going. Will be looking at more books by this author but not sure I can recommend this particular one given the traumatic plot.

"The Good Daughter" is the kind of novel that punches you in the gut, stomps on your heart and doesn't let you sleep at night.

As usual with Karin Slaughter there are some parts that are very dark and unsettling, with graphic depictions of horrible events. However, those parts were fundamental to the story and they were the reason it was so engrossing. If you're a regular Karin Slaughter reader it will not come as a shock, but if it's your first book by her, know that she does not shy away from horrible scenes.

As usual, I did not see the twists coming and I was shocked several times by the way she unfolded the plot and the flashbacks, carefully unraveling the web of white lies, misunderstandings, secrets and manipulation.

The whole cast of characters was interesting, compelling, and so real! They made mistakes, they didn't know what to do, they acted selfishly or they were disconnected from each other, but they loved each other deeply. My personal favorites are Ben and Sam, but they all added something to the story.

Overall it's an excellent book that kept me on my toes, made me cringe but also made me cry with the blunt force of the feelings that the characters felt for each other, and how they were broken by circumstances. A powerful family drama in addition to a gripping thriller.

Good book, good story, however it was WAY to long! A lot of boring conversations that didn’t need to happen.

Oh this is so, so heavy. It’s a mystery/thriller but with so much drama that I felt like watching a cartoon just to reset my mind. Needless to say, it is a good read. Not so much of a page turner in a few parts which is why I’m deducting a star.

4 Stars.
