why must everyone be such downers!!! this WAS fun—sure, more somber than the movie at parts, but on what planet does a little seriousness mean things can't still be fun, geez.

I personally really loved how this dug more into the aftermath of spock's resurrection and his and mccoy's bond from the katra transfer, the real lack of that was the one thing from the movie that disappointed me most. the bits that were added (or maybe weren't, I'd have to rewatch if they could just be descriptions of actual acting, but I'm thinking abt the spock-esque head tilt bones does at one point) where there's a grey area between their characters were well done, and it brought all that to an emotional/character-driven conclusion that the film just doesn't.

I also thought the traveler stuff was interesting, if in an extra-canonical way (like, I think it's funny that the movie never bothers to get into it, but I also like this interpretation, and they coexist in my mind, not one usurping the other.) same with the other one- or two-off characters, like the other captains, the garbagemen, etc.

plus, gillian's introspective Mood triggered by a bruce springsteen song... representation matters.

(I agree the characterization of sulu is a bit weird, and if that's to jive w/ mcintyre's other novelizations I understand, but yeah it didn't make much sense here. sulu is very cool and very handsome and fun, let him be cool and handsome and fun.)

("keaton, why have you shelved this with your university readings?" well friends that's because I read it for university. "how on earth—" well when you're a teacher's pet they let you do basically whatever you want for papers and so I'm writing about the mini trilogy (films 2-4) through the lens of paradise lost. read it and weep, bitches.)

Love love love loooove Star Trek 4 so much so I knew I had to pick this up eventually. It’s about as good as a novelization can be, but some of the more iconic jokes were changed around for some reason? I appreciate it for trying to do some things differently, and sometimes it worked out really well, but not always. Still pretty good!

The Voyage Home is such a fun Trek movie with a surprisingly complex emotional undertone hidden beneath its one-liners and comedic timing. Due to the film’s dynamism and established Trek lore, the novelization is simply at too much of a disadvantage to truly excel, but it does an admirable job. The highlight was certainly the occasional windows into Kirk’s and Spock’s thoughts and feelings, which makes this a worthwhile read for fans of either character or of The Premise.

While the 1980s audiobook version is heavily abridged, Takei and Nimoy are excellent narrators, their words well-paced and clearly enunciated. One round-trip work commute passed far more quickly and enjoyably for me while listening the audiobook, which I borrowed from my local library through Libby.

I loved the in between chapter parts that give more insight into Spock’s perspective. Those bits alone definitely make the book worth getting. Besides those bits, the book struggles to live up to the comedic timing of the original movie, but I do love the movie so it’s hard to complain. The audiobook is narrated by George takei and he does a phenomenal job, plus the Spock perspective bits are narrated by nimoy himself

The most fun of the original Trek movies, even as a novelization.

2.5 stars I feel bad about writing a bad review, but to be fair, it was awful. 1 star because the movie is one of my all time favorites. 1 star because I listened to George Takei and he is amazing and I will listen to ANYTHING he reads. So really this book is a 0.5.

Just watch the movie, because the book is not worth the paper it is printed on. I know that movie adaptations are tough. I feel for the author, but someone should have stopped this book before it went to print.
