Middle grade book which holds its own when read as an adult. This was my favorite required reading in middle school and I was excited to remember it and revisit it as an adult. Kind of shocked we read this as 11/12 yr olds, it was darker than I remember it being, but still an interesting world to imagine myself and what I would do in that situation.

In an Anne Frank diary style, we follow a high school student and her family as they navigate finding a way to survive an environmental disaster and the downfall of government and society caused by said disaster. Starvation, violence, death are inevitable. While not graphic, an empathetic reader should be prepared to have some feelings.

Loved the development of the main character, Miranda. She really grew up a lot during that year. 
The science wasn't very on point but that wasn't the reason I was reading the book so I don't mind. What really mattered was how the characters faced the increasing difficulties in their ways - and that was done superbly.

The characters have too little food to support a healthy diet: they starve themselves as a result. A background character starves herself because a priest orders her to, dies as a result. Religion is shown in a very negative light. The priest is a jerk that tells others to starve themselves, eats his fill himself. Religion seems more of a cult than anything else.
