Very odd little book told from the POV of the dog. I can definitely say I have never read anything like it before.

Joint Custody is told entirely from Gatz's point of view. Yep, the dog tells the story. Basically, what it all comes down to is Gatz getting in no small amount of trouble as he tries to get "The Man" and "The Woman" back together again. And he really knows how to cause some trouble.
While I wouldn't exactly call this a romance, it is billed as a romantic comedy. I'll split the difference and agree that it's a comedy. Gatz's story-telling is witty and fun, and there are plenty of laughs along his journey. I don't want to spoil it, but I will say that the ending surprised me at first. Then I thought about it, and it kind of made sense after everything that happened.
To sum it up, this first book in The Gatz Chronicles is engaging and I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish. It's well written, fast-paced, and Gatz is a terrific character.

I’m a little shocked something like this was picked up by a major publisher. It’s such a weird idea. I read it only because I thought it was my fave trope (relationship in trouble). It was not. It’s not really a romance at all because *spoiler* they end up with different people. And because the pov is a dog it’s really limited. The story itself might have made an interesting womens fiction or something had it been from the woman’s pov but because it’s the dog, it’s so surface level. I appreciated the things keeping them apart became insurmountable. They’re different people. But honestly, I think what the story is saying—that you should be with someone like you (and it is saying that. The other couple are carbon copies) is absolutely wrong. I’m an editor/bookish person and I am married to a scientist who doesn’t read. He’s the one who drags me to places and sometimes I hate it and sometimes I end up liking it. And sometimes I don’t go at all. That the guy apparently couldn’t go anywhere and had such anxiety seemed like he needed therapy and maybe some anxiety meds. I have anxiety but not to that level. But If I did, I don’t think the solution would be to find someone as introverted and anxiety-ridden as myself so we could stay in all the time.

This book is narrated by the dog, a border collie named Gatz. He’s trying to get his people back together. It’s a cute, light-hearted book.

Gatz knows right away when The Man walks into the shelter that he is the one that will be his forever home. He's even happier as The Man and The Woman spend more and more time together, but when their relationship falls apart, Gatz knows he must do everything he can to get The Man and The Woman back together. The only thing they seem to agree on is that they will share custody of Gatz. All three of them are sad for awhile, but when The Woman meets New Man, Gatz does whatever he can to sabotage their relationship.

Joint Custody is a very unique romcom told from the perspective of Gatz, a border collie named after The Great Gatsby. Even though it is apparent that Gatz is a very intelligent dog, I had a bit of an issue with him quoting Shakespeare throughout the book; that was just a little too much intelligence for me to swallow. However, Gatz is very sweet and wants what is best for his humans, to the point of finding ways to persuade them into unusual situations. All three characters go on a journey of self discovery, but Gatz definitely learns the most about human nature. Overall, Joint Custody is a cute romance with several funny moments, leading to a satisfying conclusion. 3 1/2 Stars.
