I didn't realize going into this book how much I was going to adore it. It's absolutely one of my new favorite things and I'm kind of obsessed with it. I would absolutely recommend it to all young readers, and it was just so much fun. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, but I'm over it now, and I'm quite happy that I picked this up. The Librivox recording is done really well, so I'd recommend that as well!

A charming and sweet story about a 17-year-old foundling child named Jerusha who is given the opportunity for an education. A trustee of the orphanage she lives in has agreed to fund her education under one condition: she must write him a letter once a month telling him about her schooling. He will never respond, and she doesn’t even know his name, but Jerusha writes dozens of letters to him over the course of her four years in college. She tells him all about school, her friends, and growing into a real girl instead of just a foundling.
I can fully admit that I wanted to read this book because I listened to the musical first. The music in it is beautiful and the story was intriguing, so I figured the source material would be the same, and I was right.
However, this means that I knew from the very beginning the true identity of Daddy Long Legs. And while there is a part of me that wishes I could have had a spoil-free first reading, I actually enjoyed having that piece of information— it made me pay more attention to her particular interactions with people.
It was a fun, easy, and sweet read. I’m interested to see what the other books in the series hold.

I had to check when this book was published multiple times because I couldn’t believe it was written in 1912. This book is so ahead of its time. It’s witty and lighthearted and perfectly encapsulates what it’s like to be a young girl in college. Aside from great one-liners, themes of feminism, socialism and self-love are prevalent. The main character Judy shares thoughts about success, religion and nature in a way that prompts us to value our unique experiences and enjoy the small pleasures that make up life. I know I will return to this book frequently to put my feelings into words.
