I really wanted to love this book but unfortunately, I didn't enjoy it really at all. I love pirate history & thought this book had interesting information, but it didn't keep me interested enough. This book is heavily statistical, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but I thought it could have been included in a more interesting way. Most of it was just kind of listed in the beginning of the chapter or before talking about whatever the stats were about (disclaimer: I read the audio, maybe these are charts in the book? I'm not sure). This book also seemed to be HEAVILY speculation. There are points where we know where information is coming from but mostly the book consists of words like "seemingly", "likely" & other words that make it sound like things weren't factual. I understand that were talking about pirates from the 1700s but maybe include less speculation so it isn't so obvious? & lots of speculative stuff could have been left out without it having much effect on the story.

A quick, accessible intro to the history around the Golden Age of Piracy. Being something of a survey, it can't give enough detail into any one event or figure to satisfy all curiosity, but it's got a lot of great leads to follow up on. Unavoidably deals with a lot of extremely dark subjects; while I especially appreciated the contextualization of the British naval culture, it's got some serious nightmare fuel there. Easy reading style-wise, and love having the bibliography!
