Hangs my head in shame.
I didn't go crazy over this book.

You've got a bunch of baddies about to break out of Ryker's Island.

Spider man, Captain America, Spider girl and of course Iron Man are involved with the saving of the day. Well sorta..there are still a whole lot of baddies that get loose.
The Captain America decides that they need a new Avengers group to go after the crime dudes.

I just thought this was kinda bland. Usually I'm a superhero fangirl but I couldn't even work it up for Iron Man..and Iron Man is hawt.

The artwork was awesome though.

honestly just wanted to read this cause it seemed like the start of Jessica Drew's modern run. There are a lot of references to House of M, which I haven't read. I probably will at some point.

The Sentry is super boring, but I always like Spider-Man, Cap, and Luke Cage. The prison break was fun. Also fun seeing the Purple Man get beat to shit.

Jessica Drew's hemline made absolutely no sense, give that girl some pants smh.

Someday, I need to do a reread of Bendis era Avengers, but I know it's a very uneven and sometimes unsatisfying experience. But volume one feeds into Bendis's [b:Daredevil by Bendis & Maleev: Ultimate Collection, Book 1|8092501|Daredevil by Bendis & Maleev Ultimate Collection, Book 1|Brian Michael Bendis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1355039703l/8092501._SY75_.jpg|12843117] and [b:Alias, Vol. 1|105889|Alias, Vol. 1|Brian Michael Bendis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388275434l/105889._SY75_.jpg|6366241] storylines in important ways, so I'm including it as part of the Daredevil readthrough.

It's not at all necessary but it's a fun tertiary title, and Murdock is an important minor character.

I enjoyed it. And well... I didn't. I don't know! It just didn't strike me as anything outstanding!

I enjoyed this volume very much. For me, this was the start of my journey into becoming a Marvel maniac. And yeah, sure, I know some people like to compare BMB to like the Michael Bay of comics. But I say unlike Michael Bay, Bendes manages to weave an entertaining tale with all the action.
There’s also some nice nods to Avengers history here. A group of heroes brought together by fate to deal with a situation none can handle alone. Daredevil passing on Cap’s offer is like the Hulk leaving the Avengers. And, Tony Stark literally points out that recruiting Wolverine is like the original team finding Cap, and this also nice foreshadowing of the darker side of Tony that’s going to come out in later issues.
Story-wise, I don’t really have any complaints. It’s a simple premise that gets the ball rolling and delivers a satisfying and sometimes visceral 6 issue arc, that reveals a secret threat and conspiracy that the group will have to deal with connected to SHIELD.
All that said, it’s not perfect. Bendis does an okay Spider-Man, but his snark comes off more annoying in a team setting rather than when fighting bad guys. Like the kid in class trying too hard to be the class clown. Otherwise, there’s a nice mesh of personalities and powers.
And I don’t know if I necessarily would call this a flaw, but this series is tied tightly with with characters and storylines that Bendis worked on before. Secret War, Avengers: Disassembled, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, Spider-Woman, Sentry, etc. I don’t feel like it’s required reading to know what’s happening, but it might paint give you a smidge more satisfaction reading some of those.
My biggest issue with Bendis is he portrays superheroes as extremely loose-lipped. Daredevil lets Peter Parker’s secret identity slip and Disassembled basically started because Wasp let a secret about Scarlet Witch slip in a kinda…well, I’m not sure if it was a catty or bitchy comment, but it definitely straddled the line between the two. So, I think it’s something that’s at least a little common in this point in his career.
But all that aside, this is popcorn comics at its finest.

Logan is great.
So is Peter, but only in other people's comics. I love that he gets called out for being whiny.

I am loving this so far. I am glad to have a chance to read a new long series that features Spider-Man and some of these other great characters.

I am new to comics and have decided to read this after reading Avengers Dissambled that I read after watching all the MCU movies. I am diving into all the comics and many told me to read this run by Bendis.

So far so good. Lots of villians on the loose and an interesting blend of Avengers so I look forward to see how the crazy hodge podge of a beginning morphs into something great based on what I am told.

I dunno man, Bendis is weird. He's got an ear for naturalistic dialogue, but that often leads to all of his characters having the same voice. He knows how to make a page-turner but it all feels like fluff in the end.

Like all of this era's Bendis stuff, this is extremely post-9/11 material. Slightly deconstructionist. I mean look, the original Avengers were formed to fight a mythological trickster god. This iteration is to stop something as mundane as a prison break (super-villainy notwithstanding). Wolverine is on the team because Bendis wanted the Avengers to be the Justice League, but also because Captain America is accepting of the fact that sometimes you've gotta go Jack Bauer on people to get what you want. This feels wrong.

I think people didn't really understand what superheroes were supposed to mean after 9/11. It took a while to figure out. Bendis is trying to take the first couple steps, which, while perhaps valid, feels dated in its cynicism.

Meanwhile, still not a fan of David Finch's work.

This was actually pretty good again!

The new team of heroes assemble at the Raft (super powered prison) and when criminals start escaping its upto the Avengers to assemble and stop these criminals from escaping and well the new team forms and Spidey comes in too and we see the New Avengers confront Electro and that leads them to Savage Land and there they meet Wolverine and battle their big threat: SAURON! And whole other host of secrets with Shield and whatever Hill is upto and its so much suspense and more!

It was a fantastic beginning to a new era of the Avengers and I love how Bendis includes the popular marvel characters here and has a whole new squad plus focusing on stories with new threats is always exciting and there are so many sub plots and you have so many conflicting personalities that makes this book well awesome! Loved this and the art is so good like Finch at the top of his game here, its a must read book!
