I love this book. Another 5/5 this year.

What impressed me the most was the story telling, the world building, the characters and how the author achieved it to give every character their own voice. The diction, punctuation and grammar is different for every character which gives them even more depth. 

The prose is also just gorgeous. The way J. M. Mirow describes each scene, setting the mood before diving into the action. This for me makes the storytelling even more immersive

The story itself is set mostly in Vicotrian England, at the end of the 17th century. This gives this book a dark academia feeling even though half of the cast of characters is under the age of 18. The story is written in a lot of different POVs which contribute to the immersion. 

I wouldn't rate this book as a YA novel as which it was marketed here. There is a lot of violence and loss in this book. Which I as an adult reader appreciated but is not fit for children.

It was interesting but also felt like it didn't need to be as long as it did (though how much of that is skewed by me trying to finish it by the deadline I'm not sure). I'm not sure if I will read the sequel, I thought the take on powers and school for kids with powers was somewhat unique, and I liked a lot of the characters, but again felt long to me. Maybe it would have been different reading rather than listening?

this book was the very definition of slow burn. slow characterization. slow plot. slow action. slower resolution. everything about it took its time, and yet, I found myself engaged the entire time. I really wish this were a standalone b/c the thought of two more long-ass books like this has me already exhausted, but I'm so desperate to know what happens to Alice and the kids that I don't think I'll have a choice... would I recommend? maybe. if you're a fan of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell or a Sanderfan, you will probably blink at the length and dive headlong right in without a second thought. if you're looking for intensity, energy, and a fast pace, please move right along; this is not the one for you.

Felt a little slow here and there, but man it is worth it! Intriguing and mysterious world that never feels quite safe.

Good writing, good plot twists and some good dark gory fighting. It's a thick but surprising book. The ending is really brutal though and if you don't think blood and gore this might not be the story for you.
