Sometimes when you start reading a book and then you watch the film after and you see the performance and hear that the person didn’t win an Oscar for that shit or wasn’t nominated — you’re like: YO WHO COULD HAVE POSSIBLY WON OVER THIS DUDE, THIS YEAR??
It’s the same feeling when you see Beyoncé get robbed of AOTY at the Grammys time and time again.
Anyway, on to the book. INCREDIBLE. Honestly, that’s all I can say. INCREDIBLE.
I feel like everyone who reads this book will take something different away from it. There are very few books that are like that — that touch on EVERYTHING, so much so that you could connect it to anything really and it would be relevant - hence Beyoncé.
Reading Ziwe’s Black Friend brought me to this book. The introduction and backstory of Arthur Miller’s work was so insightful.
Death of a Salesman, the book explains something important about coddling, dependence, addiction, incarceration, lack and missed opportunities without saying anything about those specific things — and whole hell of a lot about things that are aligned to those things. It’s genius.
Dustin Hoffman was robbed.

Very much a product of its time; feels almost naïve by modern standards. Willy is, in the most true sense of the word, pathetic. I can see how this may have ruffled some feathers during its heyday, and while the overarching message is still relevant today, I don't how well this would place against other, more modern works dealing with similar themes. I truly can't imagine any 'working-class' Americans being dazzled by the so-called American Dream in this day and age.
Graphic: Death of parent
Moderate: Infidelity and Suicide

Oh my god, this play destroyed me.
Arthur Miller's depiction of Willie's feelings of futility felt all too real- it made my insides feel crumpled. But I suppose that's the mark of excellent storytelling. I do have to give a special mention to the stage directions in this play, it added a beautiful other layer.

A weird book about a man that loses his mind trying to monetize his sons lives. And he dies dreaming, like salesman.
Willy wasn't a good guy if you think about it. He was a cheater, a relatively bad father and friend. But still you feel pity for gin. He just thought what's better for everyone, even though his dreams and desires weren't the same compared to biffs dreams.
