Two books into his œuvre I can officially say I'm a Zafon stan. The way he writes is so compelling and funny and clever and each book has felt layered and complex but not in a confusing way. I am so surprised at how much I love these books but they're all I want to read now.

I found myself laughing out loud multiple times, and also delighting in the phrasing. Some of the ways things are articulated just sits so nicely with me. I should have noted them down but I was so caught up in the story. These books are genuinely getting me interested in Franco and post-Franco Spain and I am not even mad about it.

Reread 3/22: A reread of a favorite as I prepare to finally visit Barcelona!! Though the Cemetery of Forgotten Books novels are not quite a series, I think of them chronologically, so I consider this the third book. It’s the shortest and I’d say the most…gross of the lot? But its more graphic details never feel gratuitous. A large portion of this book details Fermín’s stay in a dismal prison, so the gritty nature fits. I like that all the books have distinct character too. It’s not just Ruiz Zafón writing the same story over and over again. I do think this is perhaps my least favorite of the collection, but that’s not saying much since I adore these books so much and hold Ruiz Zafón in such high regard! Now that I’ve reread this, Angel’s Game, and Shadow of the Wind, I can finally read Labyrinth of Spirits for the first time! I don’t know why it’s taken me this long to get here!
