This was a bit of heavy read for a fiction graphic novel. The story is about Caleb Wyatt, the son of a Charles Schultz-like comic author. His aged father is cruel, distant, and losing his grip with reality. Caleb is trying to find his purpose in life. What unfolds is a family drama centered around the love of comics. I found it difficult to believe that this was fiction. It read so much like a biography.

Graphic novel mostly about a "complicated" relationship between a distant father and a problematic son. It kind of felt like Daddy Issues: The Book. Honestly, I hated the protagonist, which might have been intentional. He came off as whiny and irritating and kind of a shitty person. Like I said, it's probably intentional, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

I liked this book more than I thought I would

It’s quite meta in some ways (a writer writing about a fictional writer writing a book) and very funny in some places. I liked the introspection about the relationship with the dad and the boyfriend (LOTS to relate to there).
The fictional writer is a contradictory mess, self aware and self deprecating which I find very funny, and I wonder if this fiction isn’t based on a lot of personal history

Not usually a graphic novel reader but was hooked in due to its multiple awards. Enjoyable enough to make me consider other books from same author

If you don't like reading books where the protagonist is unlikable then this one probably isn't for you. I liked all the references to comic icons.
