I would have preferred less sexual violence. Especially since the threats of rape and actual rape only happen to female characters and that puts it squarely into the “authors using sexual violence against women as a crutch”.

Other than that, it was pretty standard stoner humor tainted by eldritch horror.

This book is A LOT in the best way possible. Funny, creepy, and weird as all get out. Punk rock Lovecraft.

I would write a longer review but the next book just finished loading on my Kindle.

This book is weird and strange and disturbing and also sort of awesome.

Audible version: I had less than an hour left to finish this book and I didn't care enough to finish. I can see that this might be a good read for those into this genre, but it just wasn't for me. I initially liked the characters, but the story went off the rails for me. Again, someone who likes horror films or gore might like it, but if you're into character development and a deeper meaning to a story, this one doesn't have it.

I try very hard to write up a review for a book the moment I read it. But with Westercon last week I just didn't get to it. This was the last book I read for the Endeavour and I think it was the last book finalized for those awards. So some of my memories of this book have begun to fade, luckily - but I'll start with yuck. The non-fantasy elements were especially strong. They had the feel of a personal remembrance of living the punk scene as a young adult in 70s New York City. And the writing and situations and language and characters were intolerable and unenjoyable. And yet not unreadable. And the scenes set in later day Hollywood were very similarly upsetting and annoying to read. All the characters are awful. And the fantastical element feels arbitrary and tacked on, like a drug-induced hallucination. No. No. No.
