A magnificently informative recollection of thanotourism by Caitlin Doughty. I would highly recommend this book to anybody experiencing death anxiety or just  interested in learning about different death cultures.

As someone still processing her first death, this book touched me in a way I didn't expect. Caitlin Doughty is a really special human, and I'm incredibly thankful that she has made it her life's mission to normalize death.

If anyone asks, I want my body cremated on an open-air pyre when it's my time to go.

Very interesting to learn about death rituals and practices in other cultures. I think the book is successful in making the reader stop and reflect upon current American practices surrounding death and grief. I don't think I enjoyed this book nearly as much as Smoke Gets in Your Eyes because this book is less personal, but that makes sense given that the first book is more memoir with bits of science and history added in, while From Here to Eternity is mainly focused on the cultural practices with very small bits of the author's personal perspective of witnessing and being a part of those practices.

the idea of death in the western world, america especially, is a very daunting one. caitlin does an excellent job of showing that it doesn't need to be. while i personally wish she had gone into deeper detail (especially of the indonesian death rituals) it doesn't take away from the book that she didn't.
