I'm very late to the whole "reading the comics" thing, despite having being a MCU fan for over 10 years. There was a lot of gatekeeping, as well, with people telling me that I wasn't a "real fan" because I hadn't read the comics. Which did not make me want to read the comics. It made me want to avoid reading the comics. A few fans told me that I had to read the Brubaker Winter Soldier run, and when my library did a "read the book, see the movie" with Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, I decided to read the run.
It's quite interesting, though it's a graphic novel and I'm most assuredly not a fan of graphic novels. It feels like too many things are happening at once, which makes various individual stories difficult to follow. There's also a lot of lore that differs from the MCU.
All in all, a good place to start with the comics.
