i enjoyed the story and the characters, though it was hard not to see the similarities to another book by this author called mister magic. i'm definitely seeing a bit of a pattern here!

it was fairly obvious right away what was going on but i was kind of hoping it would go in a different direction, though i'm not sure where. the ending was very quickly wrapped up though, which sucked, and i was deeply upset about a certain character's demise (if you know, you know...). still, it was an enjoyable, fairly quick read, though i don't think i'll read any more by this author as her books are just too similar to one another!

In the acknowledgments, the author writes that this book is a “scream of rage”. In hindsight, you can glean that from the writing. There are many injustices in the story and in the characters’ pasts, and all the emotions that come along with this. I think the characters were archetypical but great to follow nonetheless. Villains are doing their villain thing, but while only one is given depth, the point is that they represent an overarching wrong, and while you can understand how it got to that point I don’t think there’s meant to be room for sympathizing.

The mystery reveal was well-paced, as was the overall plot. I really liked the characters, though sometimes they felt a little hollow. The author did do a solid job giving background and motivation where needed.

Overall, really enjoyed this. Kept me on my toes and anxious for the characters.

I felt like I was missing a story. There seemed to be a lot of back story to each character that kept being sort of explored but not. That's the reason it's not a 5 star for me. Outside of that I liked the flaws of each character. I do think this story couldn't have been fleshed out deeper and made longer but it was a neat little thriller with great twists until the end.

The book is overall a pretty enjoyable supernatural horror. It avoids a lot of the tropes of both the slasher and battle royale genre. A lot of the characters are surprisingly likable even when they are a bit less educated on things like LGBT issues or race which is rare in fiction in general. The main thing that takes this down for me is the ending is so drawn out and unresolved. It still felt like Mac was 'deferring responsibility' in her solution so to speak, when taking responsibility was such a main part of her arc. A lot of the ending feels like it was making things up as it went along.

It was a strong point for me that it wasn't a gross book despite being horror. Overall decent.

challenging dark tense

The concept of murderous hide & seek is always intriguing & this book was enjoyable enough. I only gave it 3 stars because it irks me when characters happen to stumble across something that spells everything out for them. It's the cliche of the villain telling the victim their master plan & ultimately ruining things for themselves because of it. Some of the characters were annoying, but that's okay because they're meant to be. The dynamic between characters is fun to see unfold & it raises the stakes to see who, if any, of them make it out alive.
