I think I have a better sense of what a "cozy" mystery is after reading this novel. Now I'm wondering if my cats are trying to help me solve mysteries and I'm just too dense to realize it.

Good mystery. You can tell it’s the first in the series. The mystery was a little the slow and the characters not as developed as later books. Still good though.

I’m torn on this book and don’t know if I will continue the series.

Pros:

I really enjoy that at least for the first book this isn’t mostly centered around a love triangle. It is really nice to just have the opportunity to get to know the people, animals and town.

I want to love the series because so many people have told me it is amazing. I’m not there but I also do not loathe it which has happened with some books.

Cons:

Parts of the story haven’t aged well. Without the context that this was written in the 1990s I think some readers would be shocked at phrasing and worries.

I don’t know how I feel about the animals talking and the people not understanding. It feels a little like watching Inspector Gadget when he didn’t know his niece was really doing all the hard work. That could actually make it a good transition novel for teens since there wasn’t anything more grotesque or sexual than would be seen on television.

the book was predictable but overall cute, my main problem is that the author uses the cats and dogs as a mouthpiece to encourage the euthanisation of disabled people (i wish i was kidding).  if eugenics isn’t a problem for you then go ahead!

PG-13 cozy with animal characters -- entertaining and fun.  There's language which isn't typical for the cozies I read, but I'll definitely continue with the series.

It was okay. Some fun moments, I liked the animals.
Spoiler: Could do without the gay man bad trope, it was fairly obvious from the start.
