Such a dramatic work with plenty of strong visuals and excellent worldbuilding. From the beginning, the reader is pulled into a world of corruption and battle. The idea of a dragonfly society gave it a fresh and unique feeling from other fantasy novels as we follow the main characters on a quest to find themselves in a world designed to destroy them.

Overall a great read. The story is engaging and the setting is unique - the protagonists are dragonflies and their enemies are wasps. The story is told from the point of view of a young dragonfly scribe who is star struck by the larger dragonfly rangers; the use of different castes of dragonflies and their relations to each other within the world is another excellent layer to the story. This story seems perfect for Young Adults or really anyone. Highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this work through Voracious Readers Only in exchange for my honest opinion.

Very imaginative

Simmons pens a fantastical story in The Jracon's Burden. I really enjoyed reading this story, and I found the author's imagination very vivid. Simmons can tell a story and bring the reader into a fantasy and magical world. Dax is a very interesting character and he is on a very taxing and desperate journey to save his world. The world was vibrant and the author is able to show the land and journey, filled with twists and actions. It may be slated for the young adults, but anyone who enjoys a good fantasy book, can and should read this. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I received a free copy of this ebook for review.

This book was written well enough. The characters are intriguing, the storyline engaging... But there just wasn't any development to speak of, in terms of either character or plot. And while I can appreciate a cliff hanger, this one takes that route before anything else of note has actually been accomplished. I am still giving it 3 stars, because it feels like it was well on its way toward doing those things - this just isn't what I would consider a complete book, even as one installment in a series.

I received a review copy of The Jracon's Burden through Voracious Readers Only. It is a compelling enough story, with a fully fleshed world - not an easy feat when working with bugs! The idea of building a wartime civilization in dragonflies is certainly not one I'd ever heard before, which leaves the thoroughly-covered arc of a magical quest for a greater purpose refreshed. The biggest issue I had in reading it was that at times the writing style and/or word choice became extremely thick, making it difficult to sift through for a paragraph or two. Other than those moments, the writing was well-paced and engaging. On the whole, I found this to be a good book which I was personally just not especially enthralled by. Had I been a bit more interested, I have no doubt I would have greatly enjoyed it.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I have given The Jracon’s Burden by Tom Simmons three out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is so beautiful and intelligent in the way that the author has written it. The flow of the writing fits really nicely with the theme of this book being about dragonflies.

Simmons must have a great deal of knowledge of dragonflies or has done a lot of research for this book as it’s very informative and had me looking up the different kinds of dragonflies on Google to be able to picture them as the characters within the story. An interesting concept as I don’t think I’ve read a book before where the main characters are animals before (that I can think of as a teen/young adult/adult book).

At first I thought it was going to be difficult to get into as there are a lot of words I hadn’t recognised or seen before, so it was definitely a learning process to begin with. After halfway through the book managers to pick up the pace and start the follow the story a lot better. I had found it difficult to connect with the main characters however I did enjoy learning about them and following Dax on his adventure.

I thought it was very clever how the book ended although it did en rather abruptly to keep the reader from wanting to find out what’s going to happen next and that’s exactly what it did to me! I can’t wait to read the next two books in the series to find out what awaits Dax!

I would recommend this book to fantasy adventure and fantasy action fans.
