I have no idea what to think about this book. Fascinating concepts that just didn't come together for me.

More like 3.5 stars, but I liked it more than I thought I would, so I am going to round up!

It was okay. I kind of didn't understand what was happening most of the time. It seems like there should be a book two but that doesn't look like it's a thing.

This is a good, sound book- well-crafted parallel story lines; likable characters; excellent drawings. I recommend it.

Tara is a modern girl who has just lost her home to fire and whose mother is now looking for a new life for the two of them. Josephine is Tara's ancestor who falls in love with the wrong man. Both receive an amulet filled with mercury; for Josephine, her life spirals into tragedy soon afterward, but Tara's luck is a little better.

The two stories were handled really well - the historical storyline was on black pages and the modern storyline was on white. That helped to keep track of where you were as a reader. I liked the characters, although some of the characters looked a little too similar (even discounting the two who were supposed to look alike) and it made it difficult to tell who they were sometimes. But overall, I liked that the two stories were opposite - one so sad and the other more hopeful.
