My favorite way to experience the many adventures of literatures ultimate detective and his stalwart biographer! Stephen Fry does and incredible job distinguishing the different characters using only his manner of speech. His forewords add both interesting personal anecdotes and intriguing facts.

A collection like this is hard to review considering how large it is, as well as the mix of novels and short stories. Going into this, I was worried I wouldn't like this much as much as I've enjoyed the Sherlock adaptations and pastiches I've read already. But this was so awesome! It still holds up today, and really set the standard for what detective fiction could be: interesting characters, an intriguing mystery with unexpected resolutions. The second set of short stories were amazing, and I think better than the first set. This makes some sense since they came out later where Doyle had more experience. The novels were classic, and the Hound of the Baskervilles told it's story in an unexpected way which was really interesting. Highly recommend for any fellow Sherlockian or someone looking to try classic detective fiction.

Quick hits:
+ Sherlock and Watson at their best. Watson is such a great side character who although is meant to be the reader's gateway, stands on his own (see Hound of the Baskervilles). He's a much better side character than Hastings from Poirot.
+ The stories are varied and explore many different themes.
+ The mysteries were complex and didn't always go the expected way.
+ The volume was structured well by breaking up the novels with short stories.

I highly recommend this. I'm glad it wasn't a let down, and I've already started volume 2 with more stories I've never experienced before. I'm really looking forward to the experience!

Yay. That was long, but so worth it. I've read the four main full length novels before, and all the short story collections except the last two, so it was kind of a reread for me, but not entirely. Whatever the case (heh, case), classic murder mysteries are cosy reads for me, despite all the, you know, murders.

And that's all I can really say in the review, because it's every single Sherlock Holmes book in one, so... the end.

(P.S. isn't this just the coolest cover?!)

This was the entire Sherlock Holmes collection so it took me forever to finish and I sometimes put it down for a few months at a time. Overall I really liked it. Sherlock Holmes is an incredibly interesting character and the relationship with Watson is a peculiar one as well. Some of the stories were more predictable than others and there was some repetition when I read too many in one go.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to read the scripts or the autobiography, but those surprised me the most. Particularly the autobiography was great. I don't think it's a genre I explored before and it's quite something to read about the wars by someone who was in them. I'm not sure there's anything Arthur Conan Doyle hasn't done.
