I’m giggling and kicking my feet because THIS WAS SO CUTE.
Vera is sunshine personified and while things don’t always work out for her, people are almost always willing to help her out. Including Cal, the sweet customer service guy helping Vera with her misbehaving website days before an expo that’s critical for her small business’s career step. Troubleshooting turns into a full day of flirting over the phone, and voila! Fate has stepped in.
This is my first Cara Bastone book, but it definitely won’t be my last. I can’t stop expressing how CUTE it was. The storyline, the prose, the lovable characters. This was a perfect anti-anxiety read because we all know it’s going to end happily ever after, and honestly fairly predictable surprises. Which is fine! Knowing the twists didn’t shock me, but I wasn’t really looking for them to shock me.
Vera is one of the first characters intentionally written as quirky and bubbly that didn’t frustrate me like it sometimes does. She really was likable, and not just a girl that’s “different from other girls.” And that’s a testament to the author! Bastone had me wrapped around her finger without needing a single spicy (or kissing!) scene at all. What a talent.
While the book was pretty predictable, it was just what I was craving: a little meet-cute (without the actually meeting part).

♡ Cal & Vera
☆ Unrealistic premise
☆ Didn't connect with the characters or feel the chemistry
☆ Not invested enough

I was pretty bored during the first half and almost stopped listening. It finally picked up for me during the second half/last third because a) characters started doing stuff and b) more characters were introduced to change things up. I enjoyed Cal’s voice/narration as well as his character much more than Vera’s.
