This was truly amazing trilogy, it had made me want to keep going ch after ch. I only have a few things that had disappoint me in the book. I really do like all the characters really received their fair dues. The author did great job on showing the reaper lows in the beginning and bring him back up, Victra and Sevro truly make sense considering funny and charming their are. Like how at the end it made sense on why mustang was judging Darrow worth due to their secret son. The only complaints have is how the battle with Roque was bit confusing like felt it was simply dragging too long, the death of prison girl didn’t seem munch of worth due to reintroducing the character was done badly as I completely forgot about her and the moment with Darrow family reunion felt a bit bland like every other story you have read. I will still highly recommend for great Sci-Fi trilogy story and a lot memorable characters.

(Ok, so I’m dubbing this the first Trilogy, kind of like Star Wars-these three take place in a relatively short amount of time. The next three jump ahead about a decade.)

I STRUGGLED at the start. For like the first 3 hours. So disturbingly brutal because the Jackal is the worst and Darrow and Vitra have to work through the trauma they’ve endured. It was hard to listen to yet totally necessary to the story. Serious props to Pierce for navigating that balance.

While totally feral, this book has some of the most beautiful (and deep) insights. Here’s some of my favs (the non-spoilery ones 😅)

🪐 “Mother is the spine in me, the iron. And I clutch her hand as if such a simple gesture could say all that.”

🪐 “His eyes radiate a goodness that I used to think made him seem foolish, now it just seems wildly brave.”

🪐 “Government is never the solution, but it is almost always the problem.”

🪐 “I think the sh*ttiest part about getting old is now we’re smart enough to see the cracks in everything.”

🪐 “In war, men lose what makes them great. Their creativity. Their wisdom. Their joy. All that’s left is their utility.”

🪐 “Our lives mean so much more than the frail bodies that carry them.”

🪐 “Whatever plan I make, it seems the world is content to undo it.”

🪐 “If my people know one thing it is how to survive hardship with celebration.”

🪐 “Life without love is the worst prison of all.”

🪐 “When we are wound together, we make something unbreakable, something that lasts long after this life ends.”

Ok, I’ll stop, but if you think you can handle this harsh chronicle of war and love, do it. 🤩

With the third book, I found the structure and style becoming tedious. The continued cycle of 'triumph, betrayal, hopelessness, clever triumph, repeat' didn't hook me. Meticulously detailed sequences leave nothing to the imagination, making the multiple battle and torture sequences exhausting. The crassness of multiple charcters is cartoonish and grating, as the same bits play out in the same way for a thind book in a row. Ultimately the vision of revolution is interesting but the journey to get there is less so

As a reader, there’s always that one book (or more than one) that you come across once in while that completely alters your perception of literature and storytelling. Morning star was it for me, the whirlwind of strong emotions aside, Pierce Brown continues to outdo himself and master his craft. There’s a big cast of characters and yet I can tell he’s given ample attention to each one, making them so complex and so real that I laughed and mourned with them. The character development (for Darrow, his friends and his enemies) is remarkable, it was so refreshing reading about these characters breaking out of the tired worn-out mentality that drove the corrupt Society. Sadly, there will always be those characters that are just unable to think beyond their status in the hierarchy and cannot move on, and there were. It was also interesting to read about certain eerie and deranged antagonists (oh and Pierce KNOWS how to write a psychologically sinister character), how they played the long game and their malevolent plans fell into place as they willed it, and how they were met with their due penalty.
He’s done such an excellent job of capturing our own society, its so easy to read some of these characters and fell repulsed by them claiming we’re morally better than them, but this brilliant story forces you to reckon with the fact that all humans have these innate selfish ambitions and desires, and must seek to do better. This book has an abundance of found family like I’ve never seen before, it was fast paced, it was heavy and at some stages, thrilling and exciting. Plus the battle scenes were epic—as usual. This was beautiful and the ending was satisfying, but I’m definitely not stopping here, I intend to finish this saga and I have high expectations because bar has been set by Pierce himself.
