A tense classic noir with gruesome, pulsating art and tight, sharp writing. It hits all the classic beats (the beleaguered detective, the troublesome dame, the twisty mind games of an elusive killer) but Charlton's obvious familiarity with the genre helps him make some surprising turns that keep it from feeling stale. Hollenbach's art is almost Lovecraftian, but the mixed mediums keep the frames looking real and disturbingly physical. I read Black of Heart in one sitting and consider it my best con purchase of the weekend. Looking forward to the sequel
