The writing is entincingly unreliable and the characters are intricate and complex.
At each time you read it you end up catching new details and nuances about the events that happend.
During the reading, the purpuse of the critic against the Academia itself is almost lost as you and the narrator become enchanted with the surroundings of the university, and the eccentric greek club (which the history centers).

It wasn't at all what I expected, and probably not something I'd revisit. Well-written, to be sure.

It is an excruciatingly slow book, but hard to put down. You want to know how it will end, even when you can guess at some parts. If you can hang on until the second half, it picks up in interest, but it still moves just as slow. Until about the last 50 pages, when it picks you up, spins you around, slaps you for good measure, and then gently sits you down and bids you a pleasant evening.

It has all the academic atmosphere and intrigue of Dead Poet's Society, and all the self-absorption and drudgery of Catcher in the Rye. If you like Salinger, you'll probably like this.

I'd wanted to read this book for ages and it definitely lived up to the hype. It took quite a while to read, but I think that was good because the book's slow pace meant I could really appreciate every detail. Despite being long, detailed and slow, this book was by no means boring and I found every chapter engaging. The overall story felt more like a deep reflection on the past than a conventional thriller, which I really liked because of the amount of beautiful, meaningful phrases the narrator used when describing events. The atmosphere of the book felt quite meta, and I believed every philosophical idea. However, the ending was not quite as exciting as I'd hoped and I felt that the tone of the story was very much the same throughout, making plot twists less shocking. But overall, this was a timeless, original book that made me feel really smart and intellectual while reading it.
