If anyone ever tells me that this is their favourite book, I will politely smile and back away. See, I get its appeal in light of it being satire and critiquing classicism but that could have easily been done in around 200 pages. The beginning was tedious and Richard is a really boring narrator. I'm okay with unlikeable characters but not when the novel is this  long and you have to spend too many pages watching them drink themselves to near-death. The writing was gorgeous, pretentious, maybe, but nice enough, but definitely doesn't save how overall problematic the book is. Honestly, this book could have had the exact same effect without those weird racist passages and having its one gay character take advantage of others when they're drunk. I don't care if it's supposed to be a "dark" story, it feels like a cover up for the author's worldview and I was not vibing with it. The middle part was exciting and so were some parts near the end, but with Richard's perspective, even that couldn't save how I felt about this book. And to think this entire book wouldn't exist if these dumb characters would recognise their own privilege and just gone to the police instead... YAWN!

Donna Tartt's writing is soon lyrical and for a lack of a better word perfect. She makes you feel what she imagined through the most graphic imagery.
And of course the book gives major dark academia vibes, as it's a comment on elitism and classism and how far from reality these people are.
BUT the second half of the book took forever to finish because there isn't any real plot, like the first half also has some "just vibes" passages but there it serves to introduce the reader into the lives of the characters. But in the second half it's basically a lot of drinking and drugs and of course this has a deeper meaning but that didn't make it any easier to read.
And all the name dropping of grand philosophers and poets and what not, which I get again serves the point of showing the elitism, but was nontheless annoying because it just made me feel dumb for looking every other word up. This also extends to the general language, but I think mostly non-native speakers (C1) like myself would struggle with that.

you think you know but you don't. you need to read it as a detective. in that way this book is a statement of the suspect. would you arrest the suspect?

Man what a fucking trip holy shit, the first 200 or so pages are definitely slow, but there’s a point where it picks up and it becomes very hard to put down.

Lots of highlights and low points, including but not limited to the 2 dimensionality of the only female character, the page-turning aspect, the dialogue & prose being both incredibly descriptive/beautiful/smart & pretentious/awkward at the same time, the sharp and interesting (except for camilla) and highly dislikeable characters, and the incest 😟 much to unpack. Deeply disturbed
