4 out of 5 ☆’s.

The Secret History has been on my TBR for quite some time and I am so glad that I finally put some time aside to read it.

While I cannot say that my life was forever altered by this novel (though my feelings on that may change with time) I feel as though giving it anything less than 4 starts would be doing it an immense disservice. Readers of TSH will be able to see the impact that the novel has had on the Dark Academia genre and I think that in and of itself is an incredible feat that speaks to Tartt’s skill.

I get the hype now. If I'd read this in high school I would have made this book my whole personality.

The most beautifully told tragedy I have ever read. Suspenseful and colorfully written. Masterfully, Tartt appeals to her reader’s senses to draw them vividly into her story of identity-seeking, companionship, and conspiracy.

WHEW that was a book! It gets off to a slow start, but D.T.’s worldbuilding is so exquisite that you don’t mind it too much. It’s impossible to put down once the action picks up and dominoes start falling. It absolutely owes a lot of its moral conflict to Crime and Punishment—they are both page turners for the same reasons, though The Secret History’s take on that moral conflict is fresh and horrifying. Unlike Crime and Punishment, it leaves ultimate moral judgment to the reader. I appreciated D.T.’s portrayal of the equal parts beauty and horror that we find in the classics, and the dangers of viewing antiquity as the secret burial site of some long-lost goodness which we must strive to recover.
