There was so much hype around this book that I had decided to wait a bit to read, but then somebody gifted it to me while recovering from surgery. I don't know why (maybe because of the hype??), but I didn't have high expectations with this book, but oh my...I REALLY enjoyed reading this and have thought of it often since finishing. I knew some of Michelle's story, but this filled in the gaps with so much more. I also found it interesting to read about her perspective through campaigning and being in the White House in all the various roles she held.

Audio book on Libby - I had to wait about four months for it, and the app made me aware there were twenty people waiting for it. Clocking in at nineteen hours, I changed my habit of only listening in the car to listening while at the gym, doing dishes, etc. because I wanted to hear it all. Well done telling of how she ended up in the White House.

Published in 2018, this book was edited well before the full impact of the administration of 45 was realized. And yet a quote about the impact of Hurricane Katrina seems appropriate for the current situation:

"A tragedy exacerbated by the ineptitude of the federal government's response, it was a wrenching exposure of our country's structural divides, most especially the intense lopsided vulnerability of African Americans and poor people of all races when things got rough. Where was hope now?"

As we prepare for perhaps the most disruptive transition of power this country has seen, during a time of economic crisis brought down further by a global pandemic, this book brings a little bit of much needed hope for the future.

"Becoming" is the kind of book you read/listen to when you need inspiration to get the job done especially when the job is something you would rather ignore. This story is real, humble, and hopeful. Listening to the audiobook narrated by Michelle, I felt more connected and came out on the other side feeling like a more well-informed citizen. This says a lot for someone who is not as politically literate as they should be. Plus, this story was so much more than politics. It signifies tangible changes to the fabric of the United States.

Well-written and beautiful memoir. Felt a bit dragged & repetitive towards the end. Nonetheless, I loved this!
