Not what I was hoping for. The nuts and bolts of getting published -- writing query letters, identifying agents and publishers, the publishing process -- was disappointingly short. The beginning seemed devoted to discouraging would-be writers who aren't serious about publishing. The section on contracts, at the very end, boiled down to "understand what you're signing" but didn't give any guidance on how to do that, short of talking to your agent. In between, the middle half (maybe more than half) covered marketing for writers, which boiled down to a lot of basic lessons on creating a website and using social media. If this book was called "Marketing 101 for Writers," that might have been fitting, but I didn't get the information I wanted from it.

As quickly as the publishing industry is changing, I hope Jane offers an updated edition of this 2015 guide soon. Still, this is an invaluable primer. As a freelancer who teaches and offers book coaching services, this is a go-to reference for me
