Fat Girls Hiking is part guidebook, part joyful movement manifesto, and part memoir about van life. It features trail reviews with ADA accessibility information, profiles on @fatgirlshiking community members, and information on the author's journey to finding bliss in outdoor spaces. This book was published by @timberpress and is available March 29, 2022. I am extremely grateful to @netgalley and the publisher for receiving an ARC of this wonderful read.

Summer Michaud-Skog's journey is painfully similar to my own. I was athletic as a younger kid, but as soon as I hit puberty, my body went through tons of changes. I felt self-conscious about changing out in front of other girls in gym class, and I developed disordered eating trying to fit in. Years of therapy have gotten me back to joyful movement, so I was super happy to read about a group of badass humans who love to hike (at many sizes and ability levels).

I love that this book has thoughtful trail recommendations that feature safety information and ADA accessibility facts, and talks about things like bathrooms and cell reception. I sometimes go hiking alone in remote areas, and as a woman, these are the things I often want to be informed about so I can feel safest as I'm enjoying nature. I also loved reading more about Summer's experiences living in a camper van as they reconnected with their love of joyful movement and the outdoors.

I recommend this book to everyone who loves the outdoors, people who are looking for more diverse and inclusive books detailing the experience of people in larger bodies, and people curious about how to be more of an ally in body-inclusive joyful movement endeavors. Definitely worth the read and offered insight on a variety of outdoorsy activities one can do at any ability level.

I fully plan on buying this book once it comes out- It's really just what I've been looking for. I love being active, but, it's hard to see myself as an 'active person' when the rest of the world seems so convinced that I must never exercise because of my body type, and that in turn makes me nervous to show my face in active spaces.
This book has personal essays as well as reviews of trails- a great resource as well as a way to see myself. I love how it also brings up the barriers of race and ability as well- with solid advice and encouragement to get out there even if some others may not want you.
The photos and layout of this book are also lovely!
(Also- don't worry- despite the review below me saying the book refers to 'the women by the pronouns they prefer to go by' this book does not refer to nonbinary people as 'women')
