This was such a good book! It was so beautifully written and
Spoiler I really liked how the ending wasn’t the classic “happy end” but you could still tell that the mc had grown as a person.
. It also had very sad parts ;^;… I think the mc was really likeable and relatable, I enjoyed reading the book from her perspective.

My first Kawakami! The story reminded me a bit of Murakami: beautiful descriptions of scenes, interesting philosophical questions, and a protagonist who is very passive. It was refreshing to have a female protagonist though, and I liked the commentary on feminism presented through Fuyuko’s interactions with and about Hijiri.
SpoilerFuyuko and Hijiri initially had a bit of a romantic connection, and I would’ve loved to see that fleshed out. I was a little disturbed by the final argument between Fuyuko and Hijiri and how they became friends from that, and the age gap between Fuyuko and Matsutsuka creeped me out. I was also pleased to see Fuyuko’s growth at the end, but it felt rushed, especially with the time skip that we didn’t get to see.

start was slow as hell. was massively bored of all the dialogue at multiple points. picked up in the middle and i started to enjoy it more.
Spoiler the ending was so unsatisfying. why would you build up a whole relationship to then destroy it all because mitsustuka was apparently a fraud? BS if you ask me especially because it seemed so out of his character for him.

average book overall. i enjoyed being inside the head of a character who felt isolated, but the ending ruined everything for me. 3.5 stars :)

I really loved Breasts and Eggs, but this book did not do it for me. I usually like books with vague plots, but this one lacked the (emotional) depth that needs to happen inside the characters (if the outside is excluded). I can often come up with a bunch of adjectives to describe a book, but this one I can only describe as reflective (out of the choices given). Some scenes were (and still are) vivid in my mind, the protagonists nightly walks above all.  A proofreader's pov was an interesting take on reading books as well. Struggled to get through this, but I thought it'd get more intense and/or deep on the way (it almost did). Such a perfectly tied ending was not very necessary for a story of this kind. I'm not giving up on Kawakami though, I'll still check (and read) her future works! Not every book can be as good.

Spoiler(also, Fuyuko's "only time she had sex" was a straight up rape and no one addressed it. I hated the scene, but I hated it's handling even more.)
