There is too much unnecessary information in this book. The plot doesn’t progress until about 60% in and Lisbeth isn’t really a main character.

It started kinda slow and was a bit of a drag but It picked up pace and I guessed
that Harriet is alive
I did not appreciate the excessive descriptive scene of gruesome acts against women but I guess the book is a product of its time.
It's a engaging mystery novel but it was not really extraordinary and the plot didn't surprise me that much.

I will say it was a very readable book and I was interested for a lot of the main plot. The thing that detracts from my enjoyment are the relationships. Almost everything is about sex and it gets rather tiring. Additionally, Lisbeth and Mikael get in a relationship, to which Mikael protests that he is old enough to be Lisbeth's father. And yet he still continues to have sex with her fairly regularly. Man has no backbone when it comes to these beliefs of his and it was just irritating to read about. Also there were some fairly iffy lines to me now, reading this book almost 20 years after it was first published.

There is a lot of sexual violence in this book, so keep that in mind. There are some fairly explicit descriptions of women who had been raped and killed in brutal ways. Lisbeth is also a ward because she was deemed mentally incompetent, so there's a bit of talk on that. Lisbeth does get raped during the course of the story and Mikael was a second away from being raped as well. Lots of talk about Nazis and antisemitism as well, for reasons that are apparent when you meet the Vanger family.

An interesting book, I agree with others that the beginning was a bit fussy and had too many characters to keep track of, also a bit slow. Once it got started I was really into it.

I did find all the references to sex just annoying and childish. “I would like to have sex with you”. “I like having sex with you too” it was just weird and felt so basic and unnecessary. I felt there didn’t need to be so many sexual relationships, it didn’t add anything at all to the story.

A lot of mention of “the anorexic girl” or “the girl who looks anorexic” as descriptors. Again, just felt flat and unnecessary. We get it, she looks anorexic *eye roll*.

Generally though I did enjoy the story and will read the next in the series.
