It's the first book I read by this author and won't surely be the last as it's an excellent story.
It's gritty, gripping, fast paced and highly entertaining.
I loved the style of writing and the excellent character development. The characters are very realistic and I felt for them.
The plot is full of twists and turns and I was on the edge till the last page.
I'm more than happy I read this book and I want to read the others by this author.
Strongly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

The trials and tribulations of ex-DI Ash Henderson ate fast becoming some of my favourite ever books. I absolutely disappear into the world Stuart MacBride creates, with its dark humour, stark violence and bleak landscape but most importantly filled with larger than life verging on totally over the top characters, who are completely compelling.

This is the third in the series featuring Ash Henderson. He is a man who has been the victim of the worst and most heinous crime, having lost his daughter to a serial killer (not a spoiler as it's how the first book in the series begins). At the beginning of this book, he is working with the LIRU - Lateral Investigation Review Unit - as a civilian but helping the police, alongside his associate, Alice, a psychological profiler as they are brought in to help in the search for a missing young boy, feared to be another victim of someone abducting and murdering young boys in the area.

Then another event occurs during a storm on a bleak coastal area called Clachmara when the winds and rain send part of Gordon Smith's House crashing to the sea, revealing human remains buried beneath the house.

What follows is an exciting adventure as Ash goes in search of Gordon Smith and Alice struggles to work on the missing child case without Ash there to support her. There are twists and turns as we follow their progress, danger and violence but also a lot of heart and humour - a lot of it relating to an adorable, smelly little Scottie dog called Henry with a fondness for sausages.

My sister has been raving about this author for years, and I can definitely see the appeal. A very enjoyable read, with a great sense of humour to disperse the gritty plot.
The characters are great, I didn't realise this was #3 in the Ash Henderson series, but as I was reading I kept thinking 'Ash Henderson is a brilliant character for a series, there should be more.' LOL.
My only criticisms are sometimes during the long pieces of dialogue, it was difficult to discern which character was speaking. Sometimes, I confused the 2 storylines of the child kidnappings and the bones in the garden.
Overall, a solid read and would definitely recommend.

Really enjoyed this. I hadn't realised there were earlier stories in the series, but it still works perfectly well as a standalone story. I plan to go back and read the first 2 in the Ash Henderson series.
I've also since started reading other Stuart MacBride series' and really enjoy them.

Ash Henderson returns as Stuart McBride's other main character (Logan Macrae will always be my favourite!!) is involved with the police investigation of human remains discovered in the garden of a house which is in serious danger of collapsing into the sea due to coastal erosion. As always the characters are interesting, nasty and humourous to varying degrees and the usual dose of dark humour is evident as an antidote to the equally bleak story. It rattles along at a cracking pace and has a few little mini side-stories running alongside. It is brutal at times but well worth a read but there are ongoing situations from the first two books in the series if you've not read them. Definitely recommended
