I started this series on a recommendation and enjoyed the first volume. Viscount Atherbourne (Lucien) is hell-bent on revenge after the deaths of his sister and brother. The Duke of Blackmoor is the subject of his revenge, but he decides to use Blackmoor's sister Victoria. He ruins her reputation and then marries her so he can keep her from ever seeing her brother again. But revenge is never quite as simple as one expects.
Cover: All of the covers in the audiobook series are just terrible. Overly dramatic and fake. They're one of the reasons I stayed away from the Romance genre for so long. And in this one, the Viscount seems to have a furry woodland creature living on his head.
Narrator: There are a lot of bad reviews for the narrator on the Audible site. She really didn't bother me. Maybe it's because I listed at 1.45x. But mostly it's because I heard a hidden Welsh accent every once in a while and, while it didn't go with the book, I was a bit charmed by it.
Hogwarts Sorting Hat: Tricky. Atherbourne is acting as a Slytherin, but I think deep down he's a Gryffindor. Victoria could be sorted into most houses, but I think Ravenclaw might be the correct one.
Themes: revenge, families, Regency, London, society

Look, if you enjoyed this book more power to you because for me personally this was not it.
Some of this is my own fault. Somehow in my head I thought this was a historical romance that was going to deal with a mental illness in the MMC in a complex and nuanced way, but it is not. In fact, I'm a bit confused by the title because what was the madness supposed to be? General anger?
But generally I hated the MMC and how he treated the FMC and didn't feel their relationship was really developed emotionally. Plus, this book was extremely forgettable. A couple that shouldn't be together should at least be interesting.
Looking at who the other books in this series are about gives me no faith that this author writes the kind of MMC I can get behind so I will definitely not be continuing.

This was well written and moved along at a nice clip, but the MMC was very unlikable and did not redeem himself at all to my satisfaction. I basically just felt like the FMC accepted that he was an asshole because it kept her life from being boring. Which is certainly a choice.
