To be honest, I don't get the hype. I don't like descriptions in general, so I hated the endless descriptions about the marsh and nature. I also hated the dialects these people used, and a lot of people say they are not accurate at all. There are also some very unbelievable things happening (like a whole family abandoning a child and leaving her with an abusive father, her learning to read so fast and writing and illustrating books, etc.)
Nothing happens in the first half. The second part is more interesting though. I love mysteries and court scenes, so I was fairly entertained. But I was disapointed by the ending, I felt somehow betrayed.
I don't think this is a bad book or that it isn't well written, it's just not the book for me.

This book was an incredibly slow burn, too slow for my liking. I was suggested it due to my interest in crime/thriller books but turns out I like fast paced books. The whole first half/3 quarters of the book was nothing and I felt it could be been condensed down into a 200 page book, if not, less.
Understanding its set in the 1940's-late 60's, I really struggled to read the language with ease. The colloquial slang of that time was really hard for me to decipher and I lost the point of the paragraph.
The last 10 chapters of the book definitely started to grip me and I only kept reading because I hate having unfinished books.
I'm glad I did, the emotions I felt for kya at the end were unexpected and if I didn't finish it while I was on my lunch break at work, I would've cried.
You can tell the author loves nature and her descriptions of everything made it all come to life in my head.
If I wasn't expecting a crime and thriller book I would've been more pleasant towards it but overall it was a nice book and I will watch the movie adaptation.

I really enjoyed the beginning of this book. I thought the descriptions were beautiful and evocative. But as it went on, I felt the author completely ran out of steam. It became trite, clichéd and unbelievable. I wouldn't recommend it.
