Recommended enthusiastically by several friends, I just couldn't get into this at all. Too silly and simple for my tastes.

Dead witch walking is Kim Harrison's debut novel and I think she scored.
Kim built a world where creatures of the night lived known by the rest of human kind. They were exposed after humans created a nasty virus while genetically modiying tomatoes. The virus almost wiped out human-kind and Vampires, Werewolves, Witches and like stood out because they were immune. So much for trying to fit in for multiple centuries. Most inderlanders now live in the hollows, a place where everything is possible!

Rachel Morgan is a witch and works for the I.S. and try to put some orders in the mess Inderlanders can make. Her boss is on her back all the time, she keeps getting shity missions and she's got enough of it. She takes off!
The only problem is her Vampire Co-worker (the I.S. best runner) and a pixy called Jenks decided to take off with her. Which ends in the dead treat on Rachel's head.

We follow Rachel as she try to escape this death penalty, and find a way to pay off the I.S. so they let her be, but it promises not to be that easy!

The novel is very fast paced with multiple attacks on Morgan, she is surrounded by lovable characters and she's very smart. The plot took twists I never anticipated; it makes the story very interesting. Trent is a mysterious bad guy and I can't wait to discover what the guy really is, we don't even know if he is human or inderlander. Hopefully we will find out in the following books!

All the reviews I've read say this series gets better around book 3. I think however I am done with this series for now.
In this book supernaturals and humans live in a world with full knowledge of each other. Rachel the main character (a witch) works at the I.S. (Inderland Runner Services) which deals with crimes in the supernatural world. She's either bad at her job or people just don't like her, so she decides to quit. It's apparently impossible to quit the I.S. and as soon as she does, her boss puts a hit out on her. The I.S. killing their former employees is common practice, so she is constantly being attacked.
Rachel is pretty much afraid of everything. She almost makes me understand why her boss thought she was no good at her job.
She's not too smart either. After many attempts on her life on behalf of her former employer - she decides to return to the I.S. the next day, to get information on a case. She wears a "disguise" to get in undetected that fools no one, and the assassination attempts continue. It's hard to even feel bad for her when she does things that are so stupid.
No matter how many disguises -whether it be old woman or mink, she always gets caught. It just gets more pathetic as the books go along.
There's so many more problems with this book- the fear of her vampire roommate, the story-line with the bio-drugs that cure disease, but is somehow a bad thing...It's only redeemable character was Jenks and his family.
I just didn't like the plot in this book and the main character was so unlikeable.
Maybe she becomes a badass in the next few books? I saw a summary for the next book and for some reason there was a comparison to Laurell K Hamilton. Ya right. Rachel Morgan is no Anita Blake.

I changed my mind so often during this book! It started off a little slow, as other reviewers have noted, then it picked up a bit and I started to think "Hmm, this is good!" then unfortunately at the end, I felt it took a bit of a nosedive and I have to rate it two stars. I still want a back-up pixie of my own though, yes I do.

If you are looking for a series with a kick-butt female character, great secondary characters who tag along to keep the main character out of trouble, and excellent world-building, then this is the book for you. I love all the different lore characters in this series too. Thank goodness I gave this book a try thanks to the Read-A-Thon. I’m so thankful I found another series to read to finish and an author to add to my auto-buy list too, for my collection of already growing list at Goodreads.

Story Rating: 4 stars
Standalone or part of series: Part of ‘The Hollows’ series and highly recommend reading in order.
Do I recommend this book? Yes.
Will I read other books from the author? Yes.
Heroine: Witch; Kick-butt; Bounty Hunter

Back and forth on this. Liked the world and the secondary characters, was tired to read yet another urban fantasy heroine in leather pants and felt the plot didn't really go anywhere. But I'm interested enough to read another in the series in case it just has first book syndrome.

I read this for the Vaginal Fantasy Book Club, October 2017 as the alt pick. I've read this before, ages ago. I liked this series for quite a while, but I quit after book 8 or so. This isn't generally the type of thing I like to re-read...and I don't really like to re-read very often. But I lemmed the main pick and we had this one at the store, so I borrowed it. It was a super quick read and while I remembered a lot of the characters from the first time I read this, but the plot I'd mostly forgotten, so it was a fun one to read again. In fact, I'm going to keep on re-reading as long as I can borrow them from work.

A pleasant read, though more fun after Rachel got tired of being magic's punching bag. (Also, while unintentional, some of the typos are hilarious.)

Rachel is a witch, employed as a runner for Inderland Security, bringing in Hollows folks. After a few mishaps, her assignments keep getting worse and she decides to quit (even though no one ever leaves IS alive). Her boss is fine with her leaving, but when Ivy Tamwood, another runner, and the last of the Tamwood vampire royalty, decides to leave too, and go into business with Rachel, her boss puts a death threat out on Rachel. Great story, entertaining, imaginative. 072908
