I liked the story and for most of the book I was very engaged with the plot. The ending was lackluster in my opinion, and although it wasn’t a bad ending, it wasn’t something that felt like the book was wrapped up.

I loved the story but once the main character reconnected with old family members I got lost a bit… I also found the ending odd — or rather it didn’t end how I’d hope.

Honestly, I wasn't sure what was going on when I first started this book. It seemed to be leaning unexpectedly toward magical realism, which was disappointing, and I almost gave up. It was just so different from what I had previously read and liked by this author. I'm glad I finished it though because it ended up being a beautifully written story about finding out who you are and then choosing who you want to be. For those with a strong association of scents tied to memories, like me, the descriptive writing is especially powerful and the details of fragrances later in the book are intriguing.
