The world-building at the start of this book was awesome; the second half was less believable, even though it was set in a more realistic world. This was an engaging read during pandemic times, light with just enough depth to stay interested.

This is maybe 1.5 stars. I really didn't like this book. It was far too long, and the endless descriptions of scents got to be really annoying, really fast. Really, really, really wish I'd skipped this one altogether. I never knew reading about scents could be so annoying, or so boring.

Loved the complexity of scent in this book.

Poetic, emotional, beautiful writing. The story is truly, truly unique. It reminded me of Where the Crawdads Sing, but the aspects of mystery were not done as well. I’d say 2/3 of this book was 5 stars, but the first 1/3 was slow and almost annoying - every other line was just another way of saying “my father has secrets and I want to know them.” I expected more fantasy and was relieved to find that the story was more fiction and science.

A beautiful, lyrical book full of lush descriptions of scents. It was an interesting premise that kept me interested throughout the book. I loved it!

This book is the reason that reading and books will never be overtaken by TV, Movies, streaming, TikTok, etc. This book is a reminder of how powerful our sense of smell is, and one can experience the power and magic of this story through smell in a way that would never be possible on the screen. Reading this book is a whole experience like none other. Wonderfully beautiful!!!

It was an original story but didn't pull me in at any point. I wish it had taken on a more fantasy route instead of being fiction with this magical piece in it. That made the book seem odd and didn't jive well with me.
